Requirements to Become a Foster Parent
Check out this short list of questions about the requirements to become a foster parent in most states:
- Are you at least 25 years of age, or if a two-parent home, at least one applicant is 25? (All States excluding Alabama)
- You must be 19 years of age to be a foster parent, but at least be 25 years of age to be a Therapeutic Foster Parent (TFC) or TFC with enhanced services foster parent. This applies to both parents of a TFC or TFC-E Home (Alabama only)
- Do you own or rent your home/apartment?
- Does your home have a bedroom to accommodate a foster child/children?
- Are you and all applicants in the home able to attend monthly trainings until your home is approved?
- Can you have a physical completed by your primary care physician?
- Do you have a valid state driver’s license, with reliable transportation?
- Are you financially stable, employed, or retired?
- Are you a citizen of the United States?
- Can you pass all background checks, along with a drug screen?
